Internet Media Streaming.
Internet Radio Station for the Le Mans Classic Meeting Media streaming can either be Video or simply Audio. It can be transmitted live or recorded and made available 'on demand' for viewers or listeners to play at their own convenience, obviously an advantage as web users are located all over the world. In general web streaming uses Real Player (Real Networks) or Windows Media Player (Microsoft) both of which must firstly be installed on the users computer, both have free downloads. Computer users with Windows 98 or above should have no problem downloading these products. Other players such as QuickTime and Flash are mainly used for playing local web content and its associated media clips. All media streamed on the web is highly dependant on the amount of bandwidth available to the user. A standard 56K (V90) modem will deliver good quality audio, but video clips can be sluggish and suffer from a high degree of buffering at peak periods. The process is simple and works like this. The Audio or Video stream is given a URL address. The user clicks on the link and depending on the type of stream the correct player is automatically opened. For a short period the distribution server delivers the stream into a buffer, think of this as a glass of water with a small hole in the bottom. As it is not possible for the users computer to maintain a constant link with the distribution server the glass is topped up every time the computer makes contact with the server. The result should be a constant stream of audio or video. Users linked to ISDN, ADSL, Cable Modems or a Network equipped with broadband internet access, the delivery of Video becomes a much more enjoyable experience. In general we encode the Audio or Video stream at the location. It is then delivered by ISDN to the distribution server from where is distributed around the world.
